Before moving to China, I was expecting to miss my family and friends, and things like my car and Jimmy John’s Vito sandwich. Since I’ve been here, I’ve found myself missing things unexpectedly (that I had taken for granted), like sitting around bonfires, boating/swimming on a lake, and my sister-in-law’s green tomato salsa. I also missed sunsets. Growing up as a kid in my parents’ house, all I had to do was look out the living room window to see the pinks, yellows, and oranges of a sunset over Prior Lake (Minnesota). Yet in Guangzhou, I can’t remember seeing a single one. I was usually working when the sun went down, or the tall apartment and commercial buildings blocked the view.
Living on Lamma, I still get only a couple chances to see the sun set due to my work schedule, but when I do, they are spectacular. The first sunset I saw here really choked me up. I was alone and unprepared for what I was going to see and feel. As I stood under the shelter of a little Chinese pagoda lookout point on the island, I felt really lonely. Brad was at work, and I had the place all to myself. I suddenly missed my friends and family terribly. I was looking at something so beautiful, it felt a shame not to be able to experience that with someone I cared about. I also thought that most likely, I would never share these sunsets with my friends and family from back home. Then mosquitoes started biting me, and the sun had gone down. The feeling of homesick passed, and I thought how I couldn’t wait to show Brad this spot I found. I took him there a couple days later with a bottle of champagne. While these moments of strong feelings of missing my friends and family can hit me unexpectedly, I don’t let them last too long and try to focus on good. Who knows how long we will live here, so enjoy it while we can.
